SWIMMING.

Enquiries are still being received concerning the monster carnival which is 10 be held during the course of the Exhibition. Interest seems to be widespread, and I fancy the managers will be rewarded by good sport and a good attend , ance. As the Gas Company's tender for the Mipply of light it the Exhibition has been accepted, perhaps it is a fair question to ask where the illumination fot the evening displays is to come from. The 1 original intention was to light it by electricity, but as that lighfc will not be available it should be discovered whether pro vision has been made for the lighting in the contract which has been made, * * * Members of the' Swimming Club will b» pleased to hear that the side fences at the baths are now being removed back. The contract makes provision for seating on both sides, asphalting the new land taken in, and all necessary details. Tho question as to whether trunks should or should not be worn while bathing is apparently interfering with the peace of mind of seveial of those who take a big interest in the baths. Of course there is no doubt that one would rather bathe "trunkless" in a private bath, but I certainly agree with the trunk party in that some form of clothing should be worn in the public baths. For obvious reasons the arguments have to be withheld from this column. * ♦ ♦ Tnere is also SEhother question which has been considerably talked about. Since Now Plyirouth has had mixed bathine Hawera wants it. A great many girl's who regularly attend would be only too pleased if they could receive instruction from competent male teachers, and Ihe plan might work all right if there were only friends together, but any other arrangement wcifld be distinctly objectionable. k
