MANAIA.

(From our Own Correspondent).

Mr J. J. Patterson has been laid up ] for some time suffering from a severe t ] sprain, but was able to "get up" I yesterday for a (short time. ' On Saturday night (or, to be more. J accurate, early on Sunday morning) < the back premises of the business peo- j pie were visited by a crowd who had, presumably, looked on the win© when it was red, and the result proved at day- ( lipht on Sunday that about a dozen of ', the out-officea had been turned over, , and in some instances completely wrecked. The sufferers are wroth at this^unjust visitation, and have put the matter in the hands of Constable Carroll. I am given to understand that the names of two oJ the culprits have been ascertained, and that they are shaking in their shoes. An application for affiliation with the N.Z. Axemen's Association has been granted to the Waimato Plains Athletic • Club. I The secretary of the Waimiate Plains f üblic Library wishes to acknowledge ' with thanks the donations of books and periodicals from Messrs Stevenson, ParI kinson, and Peacock, and Mesdames j Godfrey and Hornby. Mr Thos. A. Bridge leaves shortly for Ohristchurch as one of the delegates from this district to attend the annual Presbyterian Church Conference. On Friday afternoon a foreigner, .selling jewellery, who was travelling the district driving a gig, had a somewhat exciting experience. He had left his horse standing on the roadside nibbling the grass whilst, he visited a farmer's residence. When regaining the road he was struck with disiitay to see his turn-out disappearing at top speed towards town. When just inside the town boundary, on the Manaia Road, the horse suddenly swerved towards the ditch, capsizing the gig, which soon righted itself, then again upsetting on the opposite " tack." The vehicle turned turtle three times,' and eventually was brought into collision with one of the telegraph posts against which it was heaped, minus, of course, the horse, which had, by this timei, sustained some rather ugly wounds in the hocks fro mi splintered and broken shafts. The gig was found to be smashed to match wood, with the exception of the wheels and axle. An amusing part of the affair proved to be the foreigner taking the horse, when caught near the doctor's, in to that gentleman for repairs, and remarking " Vot- a lucky ding .it vos dot I yog near der doctor's." Messrs Boddie and Donald, provincial officers of the New Zealand Farmers' Union, will meet the farmers on the plains in the Oddfellows' Hall on Wednesday night, and explain the suggested arrangements in regard to securing the services of a -vet. surgeon, 1 and will take the names of tho&e desirous of falling in with the scheme. Labour Day was observed at Manaia by the banks. Tt is reported that whitebait are very plentiful at the mouths of the various streams. ' I am given to understand that, in view of the dearth of J's.P. on the plains, the names of two Manaia gentlemen have been submitted to the Justice Department, at the request of the latter, and will be favourably considered at the close of the session. Tt is reported thnt a movement i-s on foot among the settlers of this and other districts to present Mr Maxwell with a testimonial in recognition of his services in connection with opposing the New Plymouth Harbour Board Empowering Bill. One of the firm of Datson and Co. is at present in Wellington on business in , connection with the disposal of a large estate in southern Taramaki.
