THE BIBLE IN SCHOOLS.
A meeting was held at St. Mary's Schoolroom, on Monday evening, in connection with the proposal for Bible reading and teaohing in the public Bohools. Bey. J. A. Jacob explained the object of the Association which had been formed in Wellington, and of which there were branches in various parts of the colony. It was felt that as there was now general agreement amongst Protestant bodies for the restoration of the Bible into the schools, with a conscience clause for the protection of teachers as well as of children, the time was ripe for consulting the people generally, and after this and other preliminary meetings, probably a general public meeting would be held. It was also proposed at the forthcoming election to elicit the opinions of candidates for Parliament.
After a little general discussion, in which Messrs Fairhall, Mason, Clarson, and others took part, a oommittee was appointed of five ladies and five gentlemen, to co-operate with any other committee whioh might be set up in order to organise a branch of the Association in Hawera.
