ELTHAM.

(FROM OUR RESIDENT AGENT.)

BOROUGH COUNCIL.

A special meeting of the Borough Council was held last evening. Present : His Worship the Mayor (Mr G. W. Tayler), Crs W. H. McGarry, Bunoiman, Allan, H. Thomson, and F. E. Hardy. • The Mayor apologised for the absence of Crs Graves, Potts, and Blaokball.

The by-laws were signed and sealed, the date of their ooming into force being fixed for 19th September.

COURT HOUSE.

Cr Allan asked whether it was not a fact that six yearß ago a Bum of L6OO was placed on the Estimates for a court house. Mr Chew Chong had informed him that this was so. The Mayor said he was not aware of it. ELKOTBIO LIQHT. Messrs Stewart and Perm, Auckland, wrote offering to report on proposed electric light scheme. The matter was referred to the Lighting Committee. FIRE INSPECTORS. The Borough Solicitor (Mr D. Syme) gave an opinion on the liability of the Counoil in the case of a building being ordered to be pulled down, in case of a fire, by an inspector appointed by the Council. It was resolved, That the Council take no action in the matter of appointing an inspector for the brigade, and notice of motion was given to rescind the resolution appointing an inspector from the Council. LAKE ROTOKABE. The Mayor said he had visited Lake Botokare, which ne might desoribe as a Garden of Eden, but which was sadly neglected. The reserve had been handed over to the Hawera Borough Council, and he thought the latter body should remove scrub, etc., over the track, so as to make it accessible to tourists. Some L2OOO had been spent on the track, but it was now impossible to get to the lake on horseback, and visitors had to go through private property. The Hawera Council seemed to take no interest in the matter, and it was a great pity it was ever vested in the Hawera Borough Oounoil. It was really a birthright to Eltham, and people could get to the lake through private property in an hour and a half to two hours, whereas by the track it was almost impossible to get to the lake. He moved, That the Hawera Borough Connoil be aßked to hand the reserve over to the Eltham Borough Counoil, so that the track could be improved and the place made a resort for tourists.

Cr McGarry preferred the Council spending money on Park street, and other streets requiring attention.

The Mayor said he was not now suggesting any expenditure, but simply to ask the Hawera Council to hand it over to Eltham. Seconded by Cr Runoiman, and carried.

MEETINGS.

Cr McGarry gave notice of motion that meetings be held monthly.

PABK BTBEET.

The matter of widening Park road was referred to the Works Committee.
