KAPONGA.

(from our own correspondent.)

The deputation to wait on Sir J. G. Ward evidently did not think the matter of sufficient importance to warrant informing local correspondents that the Ministerial party had arrived, and correspondents, not having time to wait about the streets, missed the inter- | view. I understand the deputation was introduced to Sir J. G. Ward by Mr F. McGuire, M.H.R., at the Athenjeum Hall. Messrs J. Eobertaon and L. May acted as spokesmen for the deputation, and pointed out the requirements of the district necessitated the building of a suitable building for post and telegraph business, land for which was available, and belonging to the Department, the present office being inadequate to supply the wants of the district; also, the appointment of an officer to act as Postmaster and Registrar, as the present officer (Mr J. L. Harwood) wns about to leave the district. The post office section and post office were both inspected, Sir Joseph remarking in reference to the latter that it Beemed very small and cramped, and promised to have a return of business done at the Kaponga office, to see if it would warrant the appointment of an offioer and erection of a new building. The deputation thanked Sir Joseph for his acceding to the wishes of the Kaponga settlers by calling at Kaponga, after which the party partook of light refreshments at the Commercial Hotel, and left for Opunake about 11.30 a.m. Included in the party were Messrs F. McGuire, E. M. Smith, Ms.H.R., G. W. Tayler, Mayor of Eltham, and others.
