I EGMONT B.C. SUMMER J MEETING. 1 i FIRST DAY. ' The weather for the first day of the Egmont Racing Club's Summer Meeting ' is excellent, if a trifle warm, and the , result is that the attendance of the public is large. Visitors are present 1 from all parts of the colony, and the i immediate places tapped by train have < furnished large quotas. The local ] public have also mustered in force, \ while Manaia and other coastal towns ' have furnished a large number of representatives. The course arrange- ! ments are all that could be desired, ; thanks to painstaking work on the part of officials. The racing track is in , good order, and the general appearance of the course leaves little to be : desired. The scene on the lawn at midday was very attractive, the many ladies, in their summer i costumes, adding to the general brightness. Up to the time of writing specu- ■ lation was brisk, and the " tote " results should be equal to, if they do not sur- ; pass, those of last year's summer ' gathering. The acceptances form a tribute to Mr J. E. Henrys' skill aa a weight adjuster, and it seems as if during the meeting winners will not be too easy to spot. The totalisator is being run by Mr Harry Hayr, of Auckland, which is equivalent to saying that investments are put through satisfactorily and expeditiously. The Borough Band in on the lawn. To-morrow morning, Messrs Nolan, Tonks, and Co. will offer for sale, on account of Mr A. J. Goodson and other owners, several well-bred thoroughbred youngsters ; also the mare Vanquish. Among the visitors to the. races is Mr J. J. Russell, the well-known trainer, whose health for months has been very bad. Although not looking any too well, *' Jay's " many friends are pleased to see him about again and taking an interest in the sport with which he has for so many years been honorably connected.
