ACCIDENTS AND FATALITIES.

Christohuroh, February 16. This morning, an elderly man named James Cooksley, a contractor residing at Opawa, was found dead in the Heathcoto river, near Opawa bridge. His horse and trap were found in the river close beside the body, but the horse had been taken out of the trap. Wellington, February 16. Two hulkkeepers, Alfred Dorris, of the Arawata, and Albert Schnarndoff, of the Otalina, have not been seen since Friday. A boat is missing. Wellington, February 17. Thomas Venables, single, aged about 27, was thrown from a dray while engaged carting wood near Masterton. One of the wheels passed over his head, death being instantaneous. Deceased was a recent arrival from England.
The body of Mrs Newell, an old resident of New Plymouth, was found on Sunday at the foot of the cliff near the Waiwakaiho. Deceased had been missing since the preceding Wednesday. She was 65 years of age, and leaves a family of four sons and one daughter. The deceased lady is said to have had faulty ideas of locality, and it is presumed while out walking in the evening she accidentally went over the cliff.
