BRITISH TRADE WITH ARGENTINE.

The recent statement by Mr Hanbury that the restrictions necessitated by the prevalence of foot-and-mouth disease in the Argentine must continue to close British ports to live stock from that country has caused great concern in South Anierioa.

At Buenos Ayres it is considered that this practically extinguishes all hope of reviving the trade for a lone time. Naturally, it seriously affects the prosperity of Argentine, since during last year Great Britain imported nearly £2,000,000 worth of • live cattle and sheep.

But Argentine receives more money from England for wheat than for live stock. Last year Great Britain paid the South American State close upon £4,000,000 for wheat, and, as it has just been cabled that the wheat prospects are good throughout the country, and that a great crop may be expected from the Buenos Ayres district, it is considered that an offset may be put against the season's loss in the live stock trade.
