London, February 4. It is officially announced that Colonel Byng, after a night march, defeated Weßsells' large force near Liebenberg, re-capturing Firman's fifteen pounder and pompoms, and capturing De Wet's last pompom.

Five Boers were killed, six wounded, and 27 captured. .<

France and Russia confidentially approved Kuyper's note, but all the Powers have resolved to observe strict neutrality.

King Edward has accepted the offer of six battalions of militia to serve abroad.

Wanganui, February 6. The final selection for tne Wanganui quota of 25 for the Ninth Contingent was made last evening.- There were 310 applications. The men selected are a really good lot, eq.ial to any sent from here, and include five returned contingenters, 12 mounted troopers and six infantry volunteers. They leave for Auckland on Tuesday.

Ryan (Auckland) Troopers Ewarfc (Awatea), Tait (Auckland), J. G White (Auckland), Delaney (Wellington) Buck* ingham (Wellington) Geddes (WaU mate), Barnes (Ha warden), . Fordham (Wellington), Harley (Opotiki), McKenzie (Dunedin), Mitchell (Pleasant Point), Moore (Auckland), Roebuck (Wanganui), J. Richards (Auckland), Styles (Wellington), Young (Masterton), all of the Sixth and Seventh, also Trooper Ferris (Ohriatchuroh) of the South African Light Horee.

Captain Major has received from tbe officer commanding tbe district two passes for Hawera quota of the Ninth Contingent. One of these he is forwarding to Captain Liardet, of Stratford. The other for the men at this end of the province, he will hand to tbe stationmaster of Hawera. It will therefore^ be necessary for all the men to leave Hawera at the same time, namely, by the mail train on Saturday evening next.
