The captain of the Portpatrick has been exonerated of abandoning the vessel, but found guilty of an error of judgment in not landing from the Abergeldie at the Promontory in order to watch the vessel from the shore.
AUSTRALIAN DEFENCES.
Received February 6, 10 12 a m.
. Melbourne, February 6. The Premier of Victoria, referring to defences, advises the Commonwealth to obtain from the Admiralty the loan of fairly modern sbips with modern armaments, so that Australians may go to sea and be taught guonery at sea. He thinks an equivalent Bpent in training Australian seamen on larger ships would be found a more valuabled contribution than the sum at present voted for an auxiliary squadron.
THE CORONATION.
Received February 5, 11.9 p.si. Washington, February 5. Miss Roosevelt accompanies Mr Whitelaw Reid to the Coronation, with the Btatus of a private individual.
VENEZUELA AND COLOMBIA.
New York, February 5. It is reported that a Venezuelan gunboat sank the Librador while she was repairing her boilers at Puerto (Colombia).
