ELTHAM.

Tho week's training of the Elfcham Rifle Volunteers ended last evening, when a concert was held in the camp. A large marquee had been procured from New Plymouth, and most comfortably seated. By 8 o'clock all sitting space wris occupied, and the sides of the marquee were lowered, allowing large numbers to hear the concert from outside. A very good programme was gone through, and thoroughly enjoyed, one or two of the items being particularly funny, by reason of the performers allowing the " tune " to wander a little. Songs were given by Misses Simpson, Lee. Neilson, Boddie, Loder, Mrs Styles, Private Speakman, Trooper Butler, Messrs Warner, H. Page, Hoskin, and Dr. Scott. Misses Neilson saug a duet, Color-sergfc. Wells and Mr Simpson contributed recitations, while Miss Vida Loder gave a Highland fling in fine style. Before the last item, Captain Boddie thanked all present for their attendance, and said the interest shown by the public in the corps would have the effect of causing them to still further work for efficiency. He also thanked all those who had taken part in the concert. The accompaniments during the evening were played by Mrs J. W. Middleton, Misses Simpson (2), and Neilson, and Mr J. Keen.

The camp was a complete success, though the officers consider there should have been more men under canvas. In addressing the men before dismissing them, Captain Boddie remarked upon this fact. The captain said the week's training had been well carried out, and everything had gone through without any disturbances amongst the men. He called for three cheers for the cook, which were lustily given, and on the call of a member a similar compliment was paid Sergeant-Major Peacock, the instructor, who had taken a great interest in the camp and- made himself a great favourite. A call for three cheers for Captain Boddie was promptly stopped by that officer, who then gave . the order to dismiss.

A scratch cricket match was played yesterday between teams picked by the practice captains, I. Salmon and H. Bennett. The game resulted in an easy win for Salmon's side, who put up 60 against 25 by their opponents. For the winners, Salmon 6cored 22, Ayers 19, and Briant 9, while the highest on Bennett's side were Philpott 11 and Jack 7. The winning team was composed of juniors, and some cricketers are beginning to think that "from the way some of che juniors have been shaping, their inclusion in the senior teaios would not have been amiss.
