Received January 20, 9.5 p.m. Adelaide, January 20. The match was resumed in bright but sultry weather, the attendance being eight thousand. The wicket was excellent. Barnes was unable to play, being in bed owing to the strain of his left knee received while bowling on Saturday. Braund and Gunn resumed the bowling. The early play was steady. When 92 had been reached, Hill was missed in tho slips by Jones off Gunn. The next two balls gave him six, but on facing Braund the left hander lifted the ball to long-on, and Tyldesley, stepping two feet up the sloping asphalt cycling track, effected a brilliant catch. Hill was batting two hours and forty-two minutes, and gave only one chance. His scor6 included twelve 4's. The third wicket fell for 197. When he had made 39 Duff was .missed by Maclaren at cover-slip off Gunn ; but this was not costly, as two overs later he was out leg before, after batting an hoar and a half. He hit eight 4's. The fourth wicket fell for 229. With the total at 260, Armstrong tamely returned the ball to Gunn. Trumble ioined Gregory, who reached his half century after 80 minutes' batting. The fielding was brilliant, and the batsmen found it difficult to get the ball through, especially from Gunn's "off" theory. Gregory, when going nicely, spooned the ball to mid-on, and Blythe made an easy catch. Gregory was batting one hundred minutes, without giviDg a chance, and hit ten 4's Six wickets for 288. With one run added, Gunn clean bowled Trumble. - Howell and Noble took the score to 300 before the former was smartly caught in the slips. With only seven runs added, a beautiful ball from Gunn found Noble's wick6t. Kelly and MoLeod stayed a little while, but the irresistible Gunn bowled the latter a bailer. Gunn to-day got five wickets for 58, and kept a splendid length, being alwaya difficult. The fielding was brilliant, Lilley allowed only two byes. Rain is now threatening. Received January 20, 9.52 p.m. Adelaide, January 20. The Englishmen began the second innings with Maclaren and Hayward against Howell and Noble. The captain soon had 10 before his partner - scored, and kept well ahead, making an 3 occasional 4, though Howell troubled him a bit. The first hour's play yielded f 62. Trumble relieved Howell, and a 1 couple of overs later Armstrong re5 placed Noble. At 80 Trumble beat f Maclaren with a good length ball. r The captain batted eighty minutes—a chanceless innings. f Hayward and Tyldesley played out - time, the former's being faultless batting during a hundred minutes at t the wicket.
