MANAIA TOWN BOARD.

« (FBOM OUE OWN COBBBSPONDENT.J The initial meeting of the new board was held last night. Present: Messrs Hunt, Cave, Donald, McVioar, and Messana. (The latter will be referred to in my reports as Mr Wm. Tait). CHAIRMAN. The olerk took the chair, and requested the members to nominate a chairman. Mr Hunt nominated Mr Cave, but the latter declined the honor, and nominated Mr Hunt. Seconded by Mr MoVicar. Mr Hunt asked Mr Gave to reconsider the matter, and allow himself to be nominated, as he (Mr Hunt) was of opinion that the same person Bhould not always retain the ohair. Mr Cave said he thought Mr Hunt a most capable chairman, and would not consent to be nominated. Resolved, That Mr Hunt be chairman for the ensuing two years. Mr Hunt briefly thanked the members for the compliment paid him, and hoped the board would work with the harmony that had characterised the late board's procedings. BATE. A formal motion striking a |d town and a Jd county rate was adopted. (Cave— Tait). COMMITTEE. Messrs Cave and MoVicar were appointed' a Works Committee. (Hunt— Tait). ORAVELUNa. . Resolved, That W. Button be notified that the Board will determine his gravelling contraot, one week's notioe to be given. (Cave- MoVioar). EMBANKMENT. J. H. Resolved, That the embankment be removed as requested ; tenders to close at the next meeting of the Board." (Tait— Cave.) REFUND. 7. Judson, poundkeeper, wrote asking for a refund of 14s, costs re the late impounding case, W. Pearee v. Eepa. The amount was disallowed' by the S.M. at the late local Court sittings. As Judson had acted in a manner as the Board's servant, and the action of the S.M. in not granting the 14b feea had caused Judson to be oat of pocket, it was decided to refund the amount claimed, the olerk to impress upon the poundkeeper the advisability of strictly keeping to the provisions of the Impounding Act in future in all oases. BALL. The clerk was empowered to have certain alterations effected in the hall (stage), Mr MoVicar to supervise. (Hunt- Cave.) The' clerk was requested to obtain quotations re lamp posts. WATBB. The chairman brought up the matter of a water soheme. He said this was a vexed question that should be "tackled," and thought that advantage should be taken of the next visit to Hawera of Mr Leslie Reynolds to have a definite soheme formulated to put before the ratepayers. Mr McVicar advocated that a well be sunk near the Waiokura stream, and that water from the same may be pumped into town, the Waiokura to provide the water power for pumping operations. He thought that to ereot a t&nk (10,000 gallons) near the stream, about 20 or 30 feet high would suffice. This height, if not sufficient to produce a sufficient pressure of water to shoot over the buildings, would not make much difference, as the board oould prooure a manual engine and form a fire brigade. He very much doubted that a sufficient quantity of water oould be obtained by sinking wells in town. He undertook to make enquiries of friends on West Coast (South Island) re cost of piping as used there. The chairman said the bqsrd could not go in for an elaborate scheme, us the finances would not warrant it. ACCOUNTS. The usual acaonntß were passed for payment. HOLIDAY. Re the statutory holiday for next year, it waß stated that the auctioneers could not alter their day (Wednesday), and, aB there are sale days on every Wednesday held in Manaia, it was resolved to send a petition around in order to ascertain whether or not the majority of business people favoured Wednesday or Friday as a holiday. It was explained that it would not be the best polioy to close business premises on sale days.
