(Continued from page 2.) 1 WORKS COMMITTEE. The Works Committee reported: That Mr Templer, surveyor, be consulted re preparing plans and estimate for grading and putting in 15in earthenware drain ' pipes in High street from Wilson street 1 to outfall at brewery. Instructions were < issued to Mr Templer to prepare tracings, i put in pegs, etc., in Milmoe and Furlong ; streets and Cemetery road. This has been j done, and tenders for the work are now , submitted to the council for their accept- , ance or otherwise. That tenders be in- , vited for delivery of 1000 yds of boulders, to be delivered at the rate of 200 yds per month; tenders to close within fourteen days. Your committee have made most satisfactory arrangements with Mr Young to deposit refuse on land adjoining section 546, Fellmongery road, and right of entrance through Mr Young's leasehold. The dep6t is a considerable distance from the main road, quite out of sight, and is not at all likely to be of any nuisance. The fence fronting old depot (recently erected) has been removed, a new gate erected, and approaches to present depot improved. The thanks of the council are due .to Mr Xoung for the amicable way in which he met your committee on this matter. The time and hours for deposit of refuse will be Tuesdays, 10 to 12 and 2 to 4 p.m., Wednesdays, 10 to 12 in each week, and the Borough Inspector will retain key of gate and be in attendance jat dep6t during the above hours. Tho committee ask for power to prepare conditions and call for tenders for painting the outside of Borough 'Council Chambers and Library and Institute buildings, tenders to be submitted to next meeting of the council. Recommended that a proper camber be formed at road fronting railway station, a footpath be formed along, front of station, centre of road be declared a cab-stand, and the Railway Department be requested to erect lamp at front of station. That the borough surfacemen be allowed to put in two or two and a half days improving road to Waingongoro beach, the work to be under direction of committee appointed by Chamber of Commerce for erection of horse paddock. That all ermanent salaries be paid at end of each our weeks in each month. Your committee have gone into the matter of street improvements (in anticipation of loan of £3,264), and will report fully on the matter by next meeting of council. The Mayor through the committee should be congratulated on having brought a •' live " report before the council. Cr Haughey asked if the first clause proposed any alteration of the grade of High street ? The Mayor said the idea was to divert the surface waters into one channel, instead of allowing it to run every way as at present. Cr Fantham alluded to the disgraceful state of the level crossings, whioh nuisance would be removed by the adoption of the proposal. Replying to Cr Atkinson, the Mayor said there were objections to the surface water being carried off in the sewerage pipes. Cr Whittington explained the reason for the necessity of proper levels for Milmoe and Furlong streets. Cr Atkinson 'thought the Town Clerk should get information as to the cost of stone-crusher, the amount that would be saved annually, and how long it would take to pay cost of crusher. The Mayor said the council's experience had been that crushed stone was little cheaper than that broken by hand. However, the clerk could prepare a report for next meeting. Cr Hirst thought it was a big order for the Town Clerk. Cr Haughey said the clerk would have a fair idea from transactions in the past. Cr Whittington said after the committee's report on works was prepared the clerk might be able to give a report, but not now. The Mayor said the clerk would be able to give an approximate idea. Cr Bobbins also spoke. Re rubbish depot, Cr Robbing explained that by the new arrangement all nuisance would be done away with. Cr Fantham explained that the depot was not really on Mr Young's property, but on a road. Gr Hirst did not see the need for the inspector to go down with every person who depired to shoot rubbish. The Mayor said the committee had arrived at a satisfactory solution of a disagreeable matter. Cr Whittington would like to see the Drill Hall included in the clause re painting. The Mayor moved in the direction suggested, and the amendment was agreed to. Cr Fantham suggested that some sign should be put on the Borough Chambers' front ; people might now pass it by and not know what building it was. The Mayor and Cr Haughey were favorable to the suggestion, which was adopted. In answer to the Mayor, Cr Robbins said the question of the painting of the firebell tower had been purposely omitted in view of a scheme in course of preparation. In regard to the proposal for works near railway station, the Mayor and Cr Robbins spoke strongly in favor of it. While agreeing with the suggestion in general, Cr Haughey would much prefer the cab-stand to be in the centre of the road. Cr Robbins said the beach was used principally by the borough people, and he strongly supported the proposal re repairing of road to Waingongoro beach. The report as a whole was adopted. BAND GUARANTORS. In reply to Cr Robbins, the Mayor said some of the guarantors to the band instrument fund had been seen ; others had not. AHIPAIPA ROAD. On the motion of Cr Whittington, seconded by Cr Haughey, neoessary work will be done on Ahipaipa road. A QUESTION. Cr Haughey asked as to the position of the half-chain street running from Mr Fake's property. Cr Fantham asked questions as to other half-chain streets. The Mayor said if the betterment system was adopted it would be an advantage, as those on one side of a street who gave \and for the widening of that street would be to a certain extent recouped in cash by those on the other side who benefited. BAKFDRIiT COMMITTEE. The Mayor, replying to Cr Fantham, said the Kanfurly Reception Committee would meet on Tuesday next. TENDERS. Only one tender was received for street work, and was declined. The matter of the work on the Cemetery road was referred to the Works Committee, with power to act. The council rose.
