CROWN TENANTS.
The following important question was put by Captain Russell to the Minister of Lands: — "Whether he will consider the advisableness of amending subsection 2 of clause 157 of the Land Act, 1892, so as to afford relief to Crown^tenants by exempting all those who have effected substantial improvements on the land to the value of 20 per cent within two years from the date of their license or lease from further paying their rent half-yearly in advance ?" Mr Duncan said he intended to introduce a Land Bill in the course of a few days. There would be hi the bill a good many improvements in regard to the taking up of land, and especially bush land. The matter mentioned in the question would, he thought, be got over to a great extent by the bill. For his own part, he did not think that Crown tenants should be called upon to pay anything but what they had a chance of getting out of the land. The only safeguards required were those which were necessary for the purpose of ensuring settlement of a legitimate kind and preventing speculation.— N.Z. Times.
