A Self-Sacrificing Bishop.

NAPIER, September 26. The synod of the diocese of Waiapu, whioh met to-day, had a great surprise sprang upon it by the intimation at the close of Bishop's opening address that be intended to resign and proceed as missionary to Persia. He formerly held an importbnt post in Northern India under the Churob Missionary Sooiety, but bad to leave India on account of his health. His sojourn of sixteen years in New Zealand had, he said, benefited him so muoh tbat, in spite of added years, be was able to undergo a considerable amount of fatigue, and he felt it his doty to return to tbe missionary field. Men were urgently needed in Persia, and bb he bad considerable knowledge of the people and tbeir language, he bad offered bis servioes in tbat field, and the Missionary Sooiety had acoepted them. He felt very deep regret at leaving New Zealand, where he bad so many warm friends, and nothing but an imperative sense of duty would have caused him to take tbis step.
