FOOTBALL.

THE NEW ZEALAND TEAM IN

AUSTRALIA.

THE PARRAMATTA MATCH.

A WIN FOR NEW ZEALAND.

(PER PRESS ASSOCIATION.)

SYDNEY, July 28. Tbe New Zealand Football team were formally welcomed by the Nev South Wales Rugby Union to-night. There was a cordial gathering to greet the visitors. The New Zealanders won the first match against Parramatta by a goal and a try— B (? 7) points— to nil. They were playing at a disadvantage, as they had not recovered from the voyage ; but after the first half of the game they proved much too strong for their opponents. Ellison secured the first try and kicked a goal from it, which was disallowed, as the ball touched a Parramatta player. He also kicked the other goal from a try by Lambie.

The weather was gloriously fine, and there was a large attendance. Following was the New Zealand team ;— Fall baok — D'Arcy; Ifcreequarters— Jervis, Wyn* yard, and Bayly; halves— Gage and Herrold ; forwards— Lambie, Cockroft, Ellison, Stuart, McKenzie, Pringle, Hiroa, Murray, and Mowlem. It was soon evident that lack of praotioe and combination, after the rough voyage, were operating strongly against tbe visitors, many of whom had not recovered their shore legs. The local men, perceiving their advantage, pressed thorn hard in an endeavor to score early in the game before their opponents had time to warm np. Though they failed, the New Zealanders were kept on tbe defensive. The collaring of the latter was not up to tbe mark, and they were a good deal hampered by want of knowledge of the New South WalMruleg.which differ slightly from the generally accepted code. A halfhour's hard work had a good effeot on the visiting team, and enabled them to pull themselves together a little. Bayly, by a serviceable kiok, followed by a smart run on Jervis' part, carried tbe play into the reds' twenty.five. There Ellison got hold of the ball, and finding an opening, asserted bis old reputation as one of the smartest scoring forwards in New Zealand, by scoring the first try of tho tour. Tbe New Zealand captain took the kiok himßelf, but Fraser, with a smart rush, was just able to touch the ball as ie soared up and over tbe goal. The goal was therefore nullified, and only a try allowed. On resuming play Wynyard had a pot shot, bat jaefc wenfc outside the post. Half-time was then called. The visitors were now more at home, and the play became muoh faster. The Parraraatta team worked with right good will, and by a rash Fraser, Oxley, and Torlie carried the game into New Zealand territory. D'Aroy, who was playing a steady game at baok, made a capital run and ended with a good punt, which shifted the scene again to the other end. Lambie and McKensie came up smartly, and maintained the advantage. Hiroa forced his way almost to tho goal line, where a scrummage followed, from which the reds secured the ball. Wynyard promptly panted into touch. A smart piece of passing between Wynyard, Bayly, Mowlem, and Gage almost let in the latter, who was collared on the line. Some merry play followed, Parramatta having hard work to prevent" tbe blacks scoring. Tanks eventually got his side out of danger. The smartest piece of passing in the game followed, CocKroft, Wynyard, Gage, and Jervis having a hand in it, the latter being eventually pushed into touch close to the reds' line. When it was thrown out Lambie secured the ball, and got over. Ellison converted the try into a neat goal. The New Zealanders thus won their first match Inder most disadvantageous circumfences.
