BOROUGH MATTERS.

After the council's business was over last evening, the Mayor stated tbat he thought it was not oat of place for him to make_ a few remarks concerning matters affecting tbe borough that did not oome ' directly under the oounoil's notice, but were matterß councillors should thick of and discuss among themselves, and with townspeople and others whenever oppor* tunity offered. Tbe first matter was one they could congratulate themselves upon, viz, the successful result of the Exhibition in oonneotion with the proposed District Hospital. The matter would be shortly' calling for their, attention. A great deal of work had been done and all those engaged in the undertaking would very shortly hay» to do a deal more bo as to number it among the things accomplished. The projected water supply — a moil important question— was omitted from tbat evening's discussion, for the reason that Mr Climie's report was not to hand, but he hoped it would be ready by the time a special meeting would be beid in about a week's time to consider tbe Pablio Works and Finance Committees' reports. The idea of starting one was evoked by reason of the splendid collection of curiosities and works of art lately exhibited bere. Tbe nuoleus for a 'museum was already promised, to that they might look forward at no distant date to adding a valuable and educational establishment to tbe town and surrounding district's possessions. Another matter, one that he had already mentioned, was tbe necessity for appoint* ing Mr Twigg as engineer at a salary t 10 that the council might gat estimates of the costs of varioui works, prepared with seme degree of accuracy and information that none but expert! oould supply. Yet anotber matter tbat tbe councillors might bear in mind was tbe necessity for erecting a more suitable town ball or enlarging the, present one, as it waa felt that in its present condition it did not meet the „ district's requirements. , ->-' -'•""
