ALTON'S WANTS.

At Alton on Wedna^djiy, crt tbe*SoDolusion of a political meeting" held by Mr G. Hutchison, the settlers present (Mr Bretberton presiding) considered th« question of tbe much-needeJ telephonic communication and the ereotion of a goods shed at Ball road railway station. Mr Gibbs moved, " That in the opinion of this meeting, representing the large and increasing body of settlement in the neighborhood of Alton, the time bai arrived when telephonio communication ' should be established between Alton and Kakaramea, and tbat tha chairman be requested to transmit a copy of tbil resolution to the Postmaster General with, r a request that communication be established as soon as possible." He thought that Mr Hutchison would assist, and tbat when the chairman wroti he would have the effective help of their member. There was also another requirement, and that was a goods thfiH at Ball road railway-Btation. For the want of such accommodation he bad suffered great inconvenience, and, in fact, be bad Buffered so much tbat he bad found it better to cart hia stuff to Patea, wbere it would be safe, bnt the expense was very great. He did not know whether fail neighbors had felt tbe inconvenience. Several gentlemen said they had. The resolution having been duly seconded, Mr Hutobison said that he fully realised the fairness of tbe claims of the people to the conveniences asked for, and though he had pressed the matters on tbe attention of tbe Government and tbe Railway Com* misstonsrs respectively be would again do so, and be hoped that when be came to see the settlers again in tbe coarse of a few months one or both of tht requests would have been granted. At ftnyrate, he would do all in bis power. Tbe resolution was passed unanimously, and the meeting concluded with the usual oompliment to the chair.
