A man named James Leonard died suddenly in tbe Victoria Hotel. He had been ill, but apparently recovered. WELLINGTON, February 28. JH

James Grainge was chargea with shooting Theophilus George in the shoulder at the R.M. Court. Prisoner had been looked on as the prosecutor's stepson, but in the evidence George said he had been living with Mrs. Grainge as man and wife for eighteen years. According to his statement be had quarrelled with her, ana was smashing tbe house with an axe, which be held in an attitude threatening Mrs. Grainge, when the prisoner fired the revolvei and hit him in the shoulder. He afterwards fired a^aiD, missing. There had been a struggle before, in which he got a rib broken. The wound was not dangerous, but kept tbe prosecutor in the hospital for three weeks.

DUNEDIN, February 27. The Hon. J. G. Ward, PostmasterGeneral, will attend the Postal Conference at Brisbane on March 11, going by way of Auckland.

WESTPORT, February 27.

To-day the Mayor cabled £100 to the Premier of Queensland for the relief of Bufferers by the flood. Probably another £50 will be raised.

CHRISTCHURCH, February 28.

The cash subscription amounts co £655. A large donation of produce has been made.

GREYMOUTH, February 28. One hundred pounds has been cabled to Queensland.
