DUNEDIN, February 1.
Major-General Whitmore made his final inspection of the volunteers of this district this evening, when 988 men paraded out of a strength of 1234. The General, in addressing the men, thanked the atafr for the aid they had given him during the three years he had been in command. He said that volunteers like others would have to submit to retrenchment. He advised the men to become proficient not only in handling arms, but in military science.
AUCKLAND, February 1.
Mr. Cunningham, Clerk of tbe Police Court, reported this morning that money amounting to about £100 had been stolen during the night from a safe in his room at the Police Court. The window and door was open, but no marks were left. The 6ate was opened with a key kept in the room, and it is supposed that the robbery was committed by some one acquainted with tbe office arrangements. The money is said to be in notes and gold.
