There was a great nre at Eden Terrace this morniD<*, causing 1 a Joss of over A'GOOO. It broke out at 12.30 in a small honso occupied, by Lleweltyu. near Ihe riding school ; am), faaneH by the south-east gale, extended, and spread across the street, destroying Spandull's two-storey block and Hill's large two-storey block following. The fiie next spread adjoiuing side streets, »nd before it was checked twenty dwel)in»s and six shops were burned down. The flames raged fiercely for two hour*, and swept an area ot four acres square, on which there were wooden buildings closely built. The insurance, so far as ascertained, is : — Hill's block, £1800 in the Union. Hills, chemist : stock, .£3OO in the Royal ; furniture, £80 in tbe South British. Pamerson's cottages, JiobO, (ViviAed between the Royal, New Zealand, and South British offices', most of the furniture was reinsured. The machinery at the riding school, £170 in the Norwich Union. There was no water supply in the district. The salvage corps ami a detachment from H.M.S. Opal did good service, checking the fire at two t-hnpa. Hill* Macks were unoccupied. Three attempts have been made to cause fires through incendiary in that block on previous occasions. A movement is on foot to have a water supply for the district. A loan was uuthoiised some time ago.
