EGMONT ELECTION.
To the Editor of the Star.
Sir, — As yonr state tbat you are willing to publish both sides of tbe political, I ask you to insert tbe following clipping taken from tbe Canterbury Times of. the sth iast.;-" Major A-tkiuaoa'a opponent baa obtained at Haweva what no candidate has ever obtained anywhere — not only a vote of confidence in himself but a vote of want uf confidence in bis opponent, which we may remember is the repetition of two such votes previously given. The Major is faring considerably worse tban bis old colleague. If be is rejected it will not be aßtonisbing, for his conduct of last session was a distinct breach of a strong promise given spontaneously to tbe electors. For our part we would rather sec Major Atkinson back in the House tban Sir John Hall, for the Major always speaks out very plainly. Now if Sir John'- 5 speech at Leeston was not a failure, it was a remarkable example of tbat Baying about speech being given to us for tbe concealment of chough t. Ot course we should rather see Air. McGuire returned than the Major. The Major's experience and knowledge would, no doubt, be very useful to the Colony. But there ia plenty of experience nnd knowledge already at tbe disposal of the country, and it is in connection wilh a goud straightforward progressive policy, and associated with brilliant survici-y. Bosides, tbe public ia alwuis clamouring for new blood. New blood is a good thing Wben it ia introduced on the right side, as it, would be by Mr. McGuire'e election, it is a still better thing, because then it has a chance of a useful career. Its introduction must replace something. Why not let it replace a veteran who wants rest, who will be improved by lying by, whose absence can be very well spared for a time ?" — I am, &c. An Elector.
