STRATFORD.
-♦ OPENING OF THE FORESTERS' LODGE. (FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.) On Monday night the new Foresters' lodge at Stratford was duly opened by the District, officers from New Plymouth, The principal installing were Bros. Furlong, Davis, Carter, and Tunbridge. The night was very wet, but eleven candidates came forward and were duly admitted, Dr. Logic being medical examiner. Tbe officers of the new lodge, to be known as Court Stratford, were then elected as follows : — Bro. Marchant, C.R.; Bro. Wheeler, D.R. ; Bro. Evans, Sec. ; Bro. Morton, Tresr. ; Bros. James, Hunter, Paton, Irvine, and Bates, filling the other posts. Messrs. T. M. Smith, Coldwell, and Irvine (senr.), were appointed trustees of the lodge funds. After the business of the evening Imd been finished, all sat down to a capital supper provided by host Bro. Coldwell, after which the usual mutual exchange of good wisbeß was indulged in. The visitors returned home by train on Tuesday morning. There was a heavy fall of snow in some parts of the district on Tuesday, it being from six to eight inches in some places. The mortal remains of the late Mr. Walter were laid to rest in tbe Stratford cemetery on Monday, the funeral procession being a large one. The deceased was an old resident of Canterbury but had been settled here for the last Bix years. Energetic and skilful in his business, alwajs ready to help in local matters, and in spite of advancing age, giving a full share of attention to any public post which he might be filling, Mr. Walters was the very stamp of settler that a young district can ill afford to lose. The Ngaire entertainment comes off oc Friday evening next. Two capital farces are to be given, viz., '• Ici on parle Frangais" and " The Area Belle." The weather looks as if it had taken up ; there will be a good moon ; arrangements have been made for the up express to stop at Ngaire to set down visitors. Everything is, therefore, favorable to a successful evening. June 29th.
