ELECTION OF OFFICERS . MR. GIESEN NEW CHAIRMAN The annual meeting of the Hutt Valley Electric Power Board last week was attended by Messrs. H. Green (chairman), A. Walker, S. Blackley, R. W. Bothamley, J. B Yaldwyn, J. Huggan, J. Purvis, H. S. Dudding, J. W.\ Andrews, P. Dowse, G. L. Giesen and J. J. Maher; also Messrs. I. R. Robinson (mana-ger-engineer) and H. E. Mcßain (secretary). The chairman, in presenting his annual report, said that the year had been a very successful one, the net surplus being £17,'5 86. Over the war years the cost of electricity to the consumer had fallen from an average cost of .Told, per unit in 1939-40 to .651 d. in 1945-6. In Great Britain the cost was 1.33 d. per unit, and in the United States 1.25 d. During the year authority had been obtained to the raising of £IOO,OOO for the further reticulation of the Board's area, and steps had been taken to acquire a site for a new office building. The following figures illustrated the growth for the year:—Capital expenditure increase, £26,910; consumers increased by 1241; maximum demand increased by 1070 K.V.A.; units purchased increased by'5,384,337; ranges installed for the year, 119 3; water heaters installed for the year, 12 39; total power sales, £225,1.59. • Mr.- Green thanked members of the Board for their co-operation during the year, and the manager-en-gineer, secretary, and other members of the staff, for the assistance received. Manager-EngineeFs Report The manager-engineer, Mr. I. R. Robinson, in his 'annual report stated that the net revenue from the sale of electricity for the year was £225,159, which, with miscellaneous amounts of £2,4 68, brought the total revenue to £227,627. Of the 12 41 new consumers connected to the Board's system during the year 859 were all-electric State houses, 322 private domestic consumers, and 60 industrial or commercial. The population in the area of supply at the end of the year was 6 8,500, the number of consumers 19,312, "and the system maximum demand (K.V.A.) 20,701. A new agreement With the State Hydro-electric Department had resulted in a considerable saving in the cost of power during the year. Mr. J. W. Andrews, as immediate past president, congratulated the chairman on his report and the fine job he \had done as chairman, and said that he thoroughly agreed with the tributes paid to the Board's offi'cers and staff. , . Other members corroborated Mr. Andrews' remarks. ; Election "of Chairman On the motion of the retiring chairman, seconded by Mr. Blackley, Mr. G. H. Giesen was elected chairman for the ensuing year. Mr. H. Green was appointed deputy-chair-man. Messrs. Andrews, Dowse, Maher and Purvis were appointed a building, committee, and Messrs. Green, Walker, Andrews and Maher a staff committee, with the chairman a member of each by virtue of his office. The honorarium of the chairman was fixed at £2OO, the same as last year.
