Street Extension

LOWER HUTT COUNCIL'S PLAN

NOTICE TO LANDOWNERS

With the object of relieving the traffic congestion in High Street and extending the business area the Lower Hutt City Council has, by proclamation under the Public Works Act, taken power to acquire certain properties at some future date, for the purpose of widening and extending Barraud Street to Knight's Road. Thirty-two landowners, including the Methodist Church, received notice to that effect last week.

It is proposed that eventually Barraud Street shall run parallel to High Street from Queen's Road to 'Knight's Road. The purpose of the notification is to make it clear that any alterations or additions to the properties will not be taken into account when compensation is fixed. Strong objection to the Council's action has been voiced by some of the landowners concerned. Discussion by City Council The matter was referred to at Monday night's meeting of the City Council, when the City Solicitor, Mr. N. T. Gillespie, notified that notice had been given regarding police property. Cr. H. V. Horlor thought that a public statement by the Mayor would allay misgivings. The public did not understand that landowners would be amply compensated if and when the land was taken and the proclamation did not mean that all the owners were going to' be displaced.

' The Mayor said there was a good deal of misconception in the matter. He would make a statement in cooperation with the City Solicitor. Owners would not be put out of their houses, which might be shifted to a residential area if the land proclaimed was taken for businesses. The proclamation only gave the Council power to take the land when the proposed scheme was gone on with.
