Power Board

The following information was supplied by the Engineer-General Manager (Mr. E. F. Hollands) at last week's monthly meeting of the Hutt Valley Electric Power Board Statistical Information: Thirty-three installations were connected to the Board's reticulation during the month of February. Installation totals to the 2 Bth February, 19 43 are as follows: —No. of installations, 17,585; No. of ranges connected, 5,636; No. of water heaters connected, 6.385; connected load in K.W. 105,075. Units purchased were 5,435,131, an increase of 446.831 over the corresponding period last year. Engineering Section: Extensive Government Housing construction to provide accommodation for industrial workers being brought into this district for industrial purposes has been responsible "or renewed activities in low tension construction during the period under review. Extensions have been run in Cambridge Terrace and Hall Crescent and heavier distributors have had to be erected in Hawkin Street and Cambridge Terrace, Woburn. Additional power requirements by the Army authorities in the Lower Hutt area have been met by the erection of heavier distributors/ from a sub-station adjacent. To meet increased loading one of the transformers in the industrial area has been replaced by one of a larger capacity. A low tension extension was run in Salsbury Place, Lower Hutt, to cover a hpusing subdivision in that locality, and a further short extension waft* erected along the Main Road, Day's Bay. Maintenance work carried out during this period included the reconstruction of the low tension distributors in the Garden Road district of Taita where heavier poles have been erected and the low ten-! sion thoroughly overhauled. The Mobile Sub-station recently constructed as part of the Board's E.P.S. preparations was brought into use early in February when a fault in a cable box at the Hinau Street Kiosik Substation put this station out of action temporarily. The Mobile Substation provided a simple and effective solution to the problem of maintaining supply and enabled subsequent repairs to be carried out at a most convenient time without causing further inconvenience to consumers. ' The relaxation of Lighting Restrictions has resulted in numerous reque'sts being received from Local j Bodies and business houses for restoration of lights that had been either disconnected or shrouded. With the present pressure of urgent Defence jobs and other important constructional work in hand all these request's cannot be acceded to immediately. Community lighting is being reconnected where it can | be placed under remote control.
