Borough Council

The' monthly meeting of the Lower Hutf Borough Council was held on Monday evening. Present, the mayor (Mr. J. W. Andrews), Crs. J. Mitchell, W. Morrison, W. F. Hall, E. P. Hay, H. V. Horlor, and W. Gregory. The Lower Hutt Amusements Ltd wtjye granted permission to screen pictures on Christmas Day, subject to the usual censor regulations. The Wellington Centre New Zealand Amateur Swimming Association conveyed its grateful thanks to the council for granting the Centre free use of Riddiford Baths for the purpose of conducting the New Zealand National Swimming Champion ships; in February. The By-laws Committee reported that a serious accident, nad occurred to Traffic Inspector Moss on 28th October. Very satisfactory, reports had been received of his progress in hospital. Cr. Morrison protested against the use of a, motor cycle by traffic inspectors, as he considered they were most unsuitable for the work. It was decided to instruct ,the chief inspector to take such steps as he thinks necessary against owners parking cars and motor lorries all night in streets which have a narrow carriageway. The Bandmaster reporting on the activities of the Lower Hutt Civic Band for the month of October, advised that eight regular prac tices were held with an average attendance of twenty-one members. Two additional rehearsals were attended in Wellington in conjunction with the Massed Band Display spon sored by the Wellington Bands' Association. The band made four public appearances during the month, The attendance at these public appearances were quite good. On the recommendation of me Finance Committee it was decided to adopt a dictaphone system in the. borough office. It was decided to make a nightly charge of £18/10/- for the use of the floodlights on the Recreation Ground, plus half the stand takings or £-3/10/- covering all charges.
