SOLDIERS' LEAVE

HOSPITALITY COMMITTEE IN LOWER HUTT / A meeting convened by the president of the Wellington Rotary Club, Mr. E. P. Hay, was held last Wednesday at the home of Mrs. John Mitchell, Woburn Road, to arrange hospitality in the Lower Hutt for soldiers during weekends.

The following representing interested bodies were present: Mesdames Mitchell and Brooker (Red Cross Society, Lower Hutt Branch); J. W. Andrews (Lower Hutt Branch League pf Mothers); Messrs. F. Stoupe (Teniiis Association), Aim (Cricket Association), Edwards (Swimming and Returned Soldiers' Association); G. L. Giesen (Boy Scouts' Association); F. Campbell, W. H. Earnshaw, A. Marshall, C. C. Odlin, J. P. Phillips, H. G. Teagle, L. T. Watkins, Miss F. M. Low (executive secretary, Rotary Club); Rev. M. R. Pirani (Ministers' r'raternal Association); and Mr. A. S. KeKmpthorne (Toe H). Colonei S. F. Varnham, Lieutenant and Mrs. J. Yogel and Mr. J. W. Andrews (Mayor of Lower Hutt) were also present, as were also Mesdames C. G. White (Dominion president), and H. H. Cornish (provincial president of the League of Mothers). The representatives present of the local organisations, together with the members of the Rotary Club resident at Lower Hutt, were appointed a general committee, and the following were elected an executive committee: Mesdames luitchell and Andrews, Rev. Pirani and Messrs. E. P. Hay (chairman), Stoupe, Edwards and Giesen. Mrs. Vogel and Mr. Kempthorne were appointed joint secretaries. It is intended to entertain soldiers at various homes and to arrange for tennis and cricket during weekends. The intention is to extend the scope of private entertainment so as to meet the needs of the'many hundreds of soldiers whose own homes are far removed from Trentham, and with that object in view the committee would welcome the co-operation of those Hutt residents who are prepared to assist. Mr. Hay expressed appreciation of the willing co-operation of the sports bodies represented, and thanked Mrs. Mitchell for the use of her home.
