Hutt Valley Harriers

ANNUAL FIELD DAY. Spirited finishes were witnessed by a large gathering c<f interested spectators who assembled at the Hutt Park last Saturday afternoon on the occasion of the Hutt Valley HaTriers' annual field day. The events were the half-mile, one mile and two-mile handicap races. A strong southerly wind was blowing across the racecourse, and this, icombined with a heavy track, prevented anyi fast times from being recorded. Nevertheless, the performance of the runners was of a high standard. Twenty-five runners lined up for each event. Mr. Geo. Clark proved a most efficient starter, and Mr. A. Mack the' handicapper, once again showed groat accuracy in handicapping such a large field. In the one mile event M. Busby narrowly defeated M. I'aterson by live yards, with N. Searle close up third. This racc proved very exciting with the result in doubt until 20 yards from the tape when Busby with a good effort just beat Patterson. In the half-mile event, F. Dumble showed a good burst of speed to win •by ten yards 'from M. Patterson, with D. Magrath third. In the two-mile M. Busby again showed his superiority over his drib mates, winning the event by seven yards from D. Magrath, with M. Patterson two yards back in thindt place. Following is the aggregate of points scored by the runners —M, Busby, 1 ((i points; M. Patterson, 2 (7 points); F. Durable and D. Magrath, 3 equal (11 points). At the conclusion of the running events the runners were the guests of Mr. H. A. Walker (club president) at a delightful afternoon tea. The club captain, V. Smith, on behalf of the runners and supporters, paid a tribute to the generosity of Mr. Walker and referred to the very keen interest he has always displayed in the welfare of the harrier movement in the Valley. Cheers brought an enjoyable afternoon to a close. An unofficial run will be held from 52 Pilmuir Street, at 2 p.m. sharp next Saturday.
