ASSEMBLY HALL. SUCCESSFUL DANCE. After many years of effort the Parents' Association of the Hutt Valley High. School had the great satisfaction of seeing their goal crowned with success last Friday evening when they entertained some 350 guests in the new Assembly Hall at a delightful opening ball. this was the first function to be held in the hall, it was not the official opening, this honour being reserved for the Member for the district, the Hon. W. Nash, who it is hoped will perform the ceremony in conjunction with the Board of Governors, on his return to New Zealand. The hall, which has a floor space of SOft. x 50ft., is of such exquisite finish and idesign with its oiled rimu walls and rafter effect plaster ceiling, that the committee wisely refrained from employing the usual ornate form of decorations for such occasions. Those used were of the simplest, and were in excellent taste, being confined to artistic lamp shades in the centre of the hall. On 'the stage the floral den-orations which were carried out by Messrs. C. F. Pilcher & Sons, Waiwhetu Nurseries, presented a striking picture. Large palms formed a handsome background for rustic .baskets of asparagus ferns and a centre-ipieco formed by a rustic pddestal of plants and ferns, whilst baskets of drooping ferns surrounded by vivid coloured cyclamen round the front of the stage, made an artistic floral display which was commented on by many, of the guests. The background was formed with a laTgc and very handsome school ibanner in silk bearing the school badge and insignia, "Ad Alta." -Opening with a "Grand l March" 'to the music of Mae Robertson's Orchestra many modern and old time dances were enjoyed. A delightful buffet supper was served in the class rooms by the ladies of the committee assisted by the teaching staff. The suggestion from an anonymous donor "that he would give one guinea to the furnishing fund if two others could be found to do the same, was announced by Dt. Butchers and' created a keen spirit of rivalry with the result that the fund benefited to the extent of £11 lis. by the effort. In his« opening re-marks the chairman of the Parents' Association, Dr. Butchers, pointed out that they had all the requisites of a good school in good parents, good scholars and a good headmaster and staff. He favoured the system of, boys and girls attending school together as it engendered a system of co-eklucation. He felt there was no lack of the "new education" in the school. He paid a tribute to the woik of the Board of Governors, and to the cordial relationship which existed between his association and the Education Department. He acknowledged fhc magnificent subsidy of two-thirds of the cost which had been found by the Government. Dr. Butchers urged all patents to join up with the Parents' Association. . The chairman of the Board of Governors, Mr. J- Sionehou.se, thanked* all through whose efforts the building of the Assembly Hall had been made possible . He referred to the .magnificent effort of the Parents' Association. When at last the consummation of the project was in sight, they were £300 short of the sum necessary before the application Kould be made to the Education Department for the subsidy, but two members of the Board of Go\einors, Mr. D. A. Ewen, and Mr. H. G. Teagle, generously guaranteed the balance. Commending the efforts of the Parents' Association, the Board of Governors, the school staff and Old I upils Association, Mr. Stonehouse expressed the hope that many happy hours might be spent in the hall bv the pupils and those who were so keenly interested in the welfare and progress of the school.
