At last meeting of the Hutt River Board tho clerk, Mr A. J'. Gearing, gave some interesting figures in regard to the receipts and expenditure for last year. The receipts from all sources were over £.1000 higher than for the same period last year, and in all the items except rates the amounts exceeded the estimates. In 1932-33 the rates collected were £4094/10/7, while for .1933-34 the amount was £535.1, the estimate being £5975; royalties, 1932-33, £487/(J/'-; 193i3-34, 625/3/7, estimate £500; rents 1932-33, £709/0/4, .1933-34 .£BSO/13/10; estiiffatc £800; sales, .1932-33, £8/18/o; 1933-34, £50/17/; estimate £50. A similar satisfactory position, though not so pronounced, was disclosed on the expenditure side, l'n .1932 3'J the expenditure was 1)523/8/11, and t!iiwas reduced in 1933-34 to £(1404/10/7, which was much less than the estimate £7055. The expenditure on new works and maintenance in 1.932-33 was £2497, an.l in 193:3-31 £2533, the estimate being £3200. Owing to legal measures being tawen to recover rates the legal expenses were nearly £300 higher than in. 1932-33, but this amount is recoverable from the persons sued or it becomes a charge against the land. A saving of over £300 was effected on interest charges, and as 1933-31 was not an election year the saving on tins was £189/11/8. Mr. Gearing intimated that owing '.o the loan conversion a saving of £.)00 on interest charges would be effected in the year 1934-35. The deputy chairman -Mr J. -Mitchell, stated that the chairman (Mr. !'. .1. Jones) and the secretary, (Mr. A. J. Gearing), deserved the congratulations of the board, and this opinion was en dorsed by the other members. In thanking the board, -Mr Gearing stated that it was most- encouraging that the board had closed the year with a cash credit balance of it 7 -'' .lis lid, which would enable the board to meet its expenditure until the ra'es began to come in, and thus save un overdraft.
