TRENCH FORCED TO EVACUATE ARMOURED FORT OWING TO RISING WATERS OF RHINE By Telegraph —Press Assn. —Copyright Received This Day, 9 a.m. LONDON, Oct. 16. A German High Command communique records alight activity on the Western Front. It claims that the Trench were forced to evacuate an\ armoured fort owing to the rising waters of the Rhine. CONFLICTING REPORTS RUSSIAN-TURKISH PACT Received This Day, 9 a.m. LONDON, Oct. 16. Conflicting reports from European capitals further confuse the real .state of the Russian-Turkish negotiations as a, week-end pact signed as an offset to the morning dispatches from Copenhagen crediting Turkey with rejecting the Soviet’s demands. A Rome radio reports that Russia assured M. Saracoglu that she has no aggressive intentions towards Rumania. LITHUANIAN TROOPS ENTER VXLNA Received This Day, 10.50 a.m. KAUNAS, Oct. 16. Lithuanian troops began marching into Vilna at 1.1 a.m., the Soviet troops •being withdrawn. STEAMER MINED THREE KILLED; REMAINDER RESCUED Received This D'ay, 10.50 a.m. AMSTERDAM, Oct. 16. The steamer Gressholm has been mined and sunk in the North Sea. Three •of the crew were killed and the remaining eight were rescued by a Finnish •.steamer. SUCCESSFUL RECONNAISSANCE BY AIR FORCE Received This Day, 10.50 a.m. LONDON, Oct. 16. The Air Ministry has announced that despite bad weather, the Air Force carried out a successful reconnaissance in Northern and Central Germany last night. GERMANS CLAIM H.M.S. REPULSE * DISABLED REPORT DISCREDITED IN BRITISH • NAVAL CIRCLES Received This Day, 10.50 a.m. BERLIN, Oct. 16. A navy High Command communique claims that H.M.S. Repulse was badly damaged and disabled by a torpedo from the same submarine which sank H.M.S. Royal Oak. The communique adds that the submarine was in German waters. The British Admiralty declined to comment on the German claim and naval circles entirely discredit the report, regarding it as typical of German propaganda, ■
