“CHRONICLE” SERVICE ARRANGEMENTS.

Early in the evening a large crowd in Oxford Street before the “Chronicle” building, where an ■efficient service was provided which kept citizens in full touch with the progress of the election. A loudspeaker amplifying unit with a microphone attached, installed by Mr E, E. D. Olivecrona, was operating from an upstairs window, by which progress reports from this and nearby ■electorates were announced, this installation also serving to amplify the results received per medium of a radio provided by the courtesy of Mr N. .B. Henderson. These arrangements gave every satisfaction to the assembly, the reproduction being of exceptional clarity. In addition, a large hoarding was employed, upon which, as candidates were definitely elected, from results received per medium of telephone, radio and the Post Office telegraph service, the names were posted up with clear details of electorates ;and party representation. The attitude of the assembly was in the main one of silent attention as the .government of the Dominion ■changed hands, punctuated by bursts >of ■ cheering and applause as popular .results were received.

The reception of the speeches broadcast by the various party leaders, .Messrs Forbes (Prime Minister), Coates (Minister of Finance), Hislop (Democrat), Savage (Labour), and Sir Charles Sta'tbam '((Speaker of, the House of Representatives, retired from .office) -was uniformly clear, and the .remanks made appropriate to the occasion were . duly appreciated by the gathering.

The crowd, the largest yet seen in Lewjp for such an occasion, remained at full strength until after midnight, .when the issue had been advanced to such a stage as to place the result -beyond all doifbt, and then gradually drifted homewards, and by 1 a.m., shortly after which hour 2YA (Wellington) cdaaed broadcasting, there wore but few citizens abroad. Boturns wore, however, by reason of the circumstances, late in comparison with those of the last election, when the •position was -finalised, shortly after midnight.
