CANDIDATES’ SPEECHES.

At various intervals during tuo evening the “Chronicle” office was visited by the various candidates who had contested the Munawatu seat.

001. B. J. K. Clo'aey (Independent) .and Mr M. H. Oram (Democrat) were the first to arrive on the scene, and were enabled to address the crowd .through the microphone. 001. Closey expressed to his hearers the great pleasure which the campaign, had afforded him. He voiced particular appreciation of the good wishes ‘ tendered to him and of the .efforts madevso' magnificently upon his ■behalf by Jvia supporters, and regretted that he had not been able to fulfil , their Object. JOol. Olosey spoke appreciatively of the manner in which the other candidates had conducted the campaign, wishing them every . success in other spheres of life. Mr Oram also expressed appreciation to who had supported him, being he «aid, sincerely grateful for their efforts in his interests. He extended his congratulations to Mr Linhlate?, expressing the view that in view of the political landslide that was apparent throughout the country, his re- ' turn to office had proved a convincing test Of his popularity in the electorate. At the moment he was defeated by a good man in the person of Mr Linkiater, who had proved an exceptionally clean fighter. He referred to the Labour victory evident throughout New Zealand, and was confident that the morrow would see a Labour Government in office. In conclusion, he again thanked the many friends he had gained for the support accorded him at the polls. Speaking through the microphone at a later hour, Mr J. Linkiater remarked that the result of the contest had been in doubt for some considerable time and that it was still possible that the recount, together with absentees' votes, might show a different result. This was, continued Mr Linkiater, the fifth time in which he had been accorded the honour of being returned as member for Manawatu, and he was occasioned very great pleasure at the renewal of confidence shown in him. In conclusion,, he extended very sincere thanks to those 2829 electors who had voted for his return, and congratulated his opponents who had played the game in a very dean contest.
