GARDEN PARTY.

GrOLDDIGGERS ’ FINAL EVENT. The 'final effort in aid of the Golddiggers ’ Queen in the Wesley Queen Contest took place, on Saturday afternoon, when a garden party was held at Miss Bowen’s residence, Queen ‘Street. The weather was particularly kind for the day, and encouraged a large attendance of both young and old, making the function an outstanding success from every point of view. The organisation was in the hands of Miss Bowen herself, who in her characteristically capable manner, kept the proceedings moving smoothly, assisted by a willing band of helpers. A special feature of the afternoon was the arrangements made for the entertainment of the young folk who turned out in force and enjoyed themselves to the full. A “treasure hunt,” arranged for their benefit by Miss Bowen, was won by Jack Oak, and in addition, Mr C. Keys worked hard throughout the afternoon, organising and conducting a variety of games. Much interest was aroused by the Balby iShow, in which there were several entrants. The prizes were awarded as follows:—Ages 3 to 12 months: Patricia Adams 1, Jean Bignal 2. Ages 1 to 2 years: Jean Jacobs 1, Robert McLean 2. A highly entertaining effort, which received much favourable comment, was the presentation of a short playette, “Merry and Bright,” by five young girls, the Misses Esme Davis, Nancy King, Rene Marshall, Joan Screech, and Tima iHayfield. Stalls were also in evidence, and carried on a brisk business. These were conducted as follows: —Produce, Mesdames Ransom and McCoomb; cakes and-sweets, Mesdames Lester and Parsons; soft drinks, Mrs Hayfield, The task of providing afternoon tea for the largo gathering was in the hands of Mesdames Sorensen, Walker, Rawson, and Burdan, assisted by a number of girls. TENNIS TOURNAMENT. In addition to the garden party the Golddiggers also organised for the afternoon a tennis tournament, which was conducted on Wesley Club's courts, and was also very successful. There was a good number of entries, and all present spent a thoroughly enjoyable afternoon. The tournament took the form of a -combined doubles competition, and was finally won by Miss Eileen Ryder and Mr Alee iChallies. Arrangements for the afternoon tea were in the hands of Miss F.
