With a packet of sandwiches and a bottle of water, Kurt .Schmitt, a Konigsberg student, anticipating a short flight, started in a motorless glider from Korschenruhe at 7.30 o’clock yesterday morning. He broke the German. record at 2 a.m. to-day and the world’s record at 6 a.m. He landed again at 8.30 o’clock to-night. SONG WRITER PASSES. The death has occurred of Mr Har- v ■old Lake, the journalist who twenty .years ago wrote the words of the song "‘I hear you calling me.’’ He sold it for a few pounds, but has since reaped a small royalties -on gramophone records.
