Fire in Wellington
J. R. MCKENZIE’S BUILDINGABLAZE.
WELLINGTON, Last Night
Fire broke out in a three-storey brick building in Willis street owned by J. R. McKenzie, Ltd., about 10.45 to-night, The flames secured a good hold of the building, but the combined efforts of several brigades appeared at midnight to be bringing them under control. It is impossible yet to estimate the damage, but it appears that the two top storeys have been gutted. The firemen were handicapped in their fight by dense clouds of smoke. One fireman was brought out unconscious and another had to be assisted out.
The tenants of the building are the Wellington Photograph Works, Radio Construction, Ltd., E. F. Jones (printer), Wellington Pleating, C. B. Crawford and J .Crowley’s gymnasium. The fire is believed to have occurred in the top floor. A crowd of several hundreds still watches the firemen fight ’the fire, which at midnight still continues.
