CONCERT, CANVASS OR DANCE

SCHOOL COMMITTEE NEEDS PUNDS. DIFFERING VIEWS AT SHANNON MEETING. At the monthly meeting of the Shannon School Committee on Monday night, the secretary, Mr Brann, reported upon the financial position of the Committee, disclosing the urgent need for additional funds. The chairman (Mr Lind) said that of the various ways of raising money he would suggest a personal canvass of the district. Most of the dances, and similar affairs of late had shown a loss and he believed that best results would be obtained by a personal canvass. Mr Bovis agreed that a personal canvass was best and suggested that it be the only effort made for the year. Mr Coates: A canvass would obviate the expense parents would be put to to get the children’s dresses, etc., for a concert or ball.

Mr Christian: I approve of the canvass, but -we have got to find a way out. I would like a further appeal to be made to the staff for a concert. “NO CO-OPERATION.”

Mr Best: I am strongly in favour of a concert, but know we have no hope of getting it. This is the only time the committee has asked for anything from the staff, and it has been turned down. The staff said they made a good offer and got no thanks, but I contend we have nothing to thank them for. The time has arrived when we have gut to make a stand. I'here is no co-operation between the committee and the staff, and we should be work together. I bear no malice but think there should be some plain speaking and consider the committee should have better treatment from the staff.

A motion, moved by Mr Caldwell and seconded by Mr Best, “That the staff be again asked to arrange a concert ’ ’ was then carried. “CREATING DISCORD.”

The Headmaster (Mr Mark): I. do not think the staff would consider arranging a concert. This is, a- , big school; the staffing is very awkward

and without a doubt the work of the children would be disorganised. I have an idea that some member of the committee tried to create discord among the staff by trying to persuade one of its members to advocate a concert. The staff are unanimous that harm would be done to the school by holding a concert, and the committee should do something to prevent its members trying to create discord. ~- Mr Best: 1 am the man you are referring to, and I have no regrets. What I have said I say in the presence of the Headmaster. I have not tried to create discord. I have a duty to perform in the interests of the school and children, amd endeaybur to do my best on their behalf.

Mr Christian said he was still of the opinion that the Headmaster should favour a concert. The Headmaster: We have raised more money out of dances than concerts. Mr Brann: I think the concert is the easiest way out.

It was, then resolved that a can--vass of the district be made to raise funds for school purposes; that Mr Caldwell be appointed canvasser; and that Messrs Best, Christian and the Chairman wait on the staff re the matter ’ of a concert.
