MAKERUA SCHOOL CONCERT.

The Makerua School held their annual concert on Friday, 16th June, when the large-dining hall at Miranui was well filled. Those present were most enthusiastic in their applause of the various items. The programme opened with the National Anthem followed by a chorus, ‘‘Hoe-a-ra,” by the school. Ron. Wilton recited “Willie’s Speech,’’ and two juniors, Boy Anderson and Margery Prier, gave a dialogue, “New Shoes.” A concerted number, “The Mulberry Bush,” caused much amusement and a dialogue, “The Doctor,” by June Prier and Ken Whitehead was well performed. Five boys delighted the audience with the tale of the making of a great meat pie. A recitation, “A Song of Fourpence,” by Oliver Anderson, was followed by a scene from Uncle Tom’s Cabin, after which we heard all about the contents of “A Boy’s Pocket.” The performance of the 4-act play, “King Mellon,” by the senior scholars, was very very good indeed, each player taking his or her part with credit.

Miss Peggy Smythe, of Wellington, gave three solo dances during the evening and the appreciation of the audience was shown in no uncertain manner, Miss N. McKittrick, of Wellington, was heard to advantage in a humorous recitaion, “Obadiah's Wife.”

The whole performance was a credit to the school and the sole teacher. Miss M. .McKittrick, is to be heartily congratulated on her training-of the children.

The ladies of Makerua provided supper at the end of the concert, the floor was, then cleared and dancing was indulged in until the early hours of the morning.
