Decisive South African Poll

JUDGE ROOS DEFEATED Received Saturday, 1 a.m. CAPETOWN, May 19. In the South African elections Dr. Malan retained Calvinia by a substantial majority; likewise Dr. Steenkemp at Namaqualand, Col. Wilkins was the only Independent returned yesterday. He captured a Transvaal rural seat. Six rural returns are still to come and probably all National-ist-Coalitionists will be returned. The new House should consist of 131 Coalitionists, two Eoosites, two Labourites, two Natal Revolutionists and five Independents,, the latter being all mild Coalitionists. It is understood that the mines 'will contribute an extra £7,000,000 from the gold premium to the general revenue, enabling the Budget to be balanced. The Minister of Lands, the Hon. P. G. G-robler defeated Judge Tielman Eoos by 544 votes. His son, Jan Gfobler, defeated a Eoosite in a neighbouring constituency by over a thousand votes.
