Sanctuary Obtained In British Consulate
BRITISH JOURNALIST IN MANCHUKUQ. , AUTHORITIES SEEKING DEPORTATION Received Friday, 7 p.m. SHANGHAI, May 19. Extraordinary interest centres in the ease of Lenox Simpson, a British journalist, editor and publisher of the Harbin Herald, whom the Manchukuo authorities desire to deport, declaring that he is anti-Japanese ana anti- Manchukuo, and alleging that he is in the pay of the Soviet. hTe authorities requested the British Consul to deport him, which was refused, Simpson meantime taking refuge in the British Consulate, which entered a strong protest against his proposed deportation.
The Manchukuo authorities declare: ‘'England has not recogni-ed Manchukuo, which allowed the Consulate to remain out of sheer hospitality.” Manchukuo reiterates its intention to deport Simpson at the first opportunity. Simpson is a brother of tne late Mr. Lenox Simpson, a well-known British author who was assassinated in Teintsin following a Customs coup two years ago.
