REDUCED SCHOOL CAPITATION
CONSIDERATION NEXT FINANCIAL YEAR. Tho vexed question of school committee capitation grants was referred to the Minister of Education (Hon. H. Atmore) by a Times representative during his visit to Palmerston North on Saturday. The Minister stated that towards the the present session, a large deputation had waited on the Prime Minister ((Sir Josoph Ward) and himself, in connection with this matter. His Department fully recognised tho splendid work carried out by school committees, and realised the difficulty experienced in making ends meet, but found itself unable to consider any increase in capitation grants at the present juncture. He emphasised tho fact that the Government was only influenced in this refusal" by financial considerations. The deficit left as a legacy by the Reform Government and the heavy expenditure necessitated by unemployment had made' it impossible for Cabinet to sanction the proposed increase at present. The position would not be lost sight of, however, and if the finances permitted would receive favourable consideration again at the 'commencement of the next financial
