ABATTOIR ARRANGEMENTS.

ROOFING OF OFFAL PLATFORM GRATINGS TO BE PLACED IN ONE SHEEP PEN. The Abattoir Committer reported to the Borough Council on Monday evening that the price of £l4 had been submitted by Mr J. Whitaker for tlu roofing-in of the offal platform, and had been accepted by the Committee. In regard to the proposal for the installation of gratings in one sheep pen by way of trial, the Committee reported that Mr Whitaker had quoted £l2 10s for providing gratings in one pen or £72 for doing the t?ix pens. The Mayor (Mr C. Blenkhom) said the Committee had thought that about £8 would be sufficient to provide the gratings for one pen, but the quotation of £l2 10s brought the matter to the Council's notice again. The Committee wanted authority to spend th*jb amount. He had been informed tha: the timber alone would cost £B. The Town Clerk stated that timber was specially run by the mills for sheep-pen gratings; it was of hearc rimu, and the price was 12s Gd per 100 ft. at the mill. The Mayor said he had been wondering if one pen could be divided between two butchers.

Cr. Keedwell (chairman of the Abattoir Committee) stated that this would be difficult owing to the double gates in each pen, one leading in and the other- out.

His Worship remarked that then; was no call on the Council to put in gratings; it would be merely to please their clients and give them as good a service as possible. On the motion of the Mayor, seconded by Cr. Keedwell, it was decided that gratings be installed in one pen, at the price submitted by Mr Whitaker.

A resolution was passed authorising the raising of the balance of the Municipal Abattoir Loan, 1929, of £l6O, by the issue of one debenture of £IOO and one of £6O.

Cr. Roe urged that something be done to the short piece of road between the railway crossing (near the saloyards) and Beach Road (leading to the abattoir)• he stated that on wet days it was very slippery, and it was a common thing to see cattle fall on it. He asked if this Council could approach the County Council with a view to having a top-dressing of chips put on the piece of road he had mentioned.

His Worship: If the members for the Wirokino riding were approached about the matter, I dare say they would see to it.

Cr. Keedwell: Tnis Council could write asking to have that done. His Worship: We might take the initiative. Could you get combined action by the selling firms down there, Cr. Roe? They are ratepayers. Cr. Roe: I could approach them and Beo what they say about it. Cr. Keodwell suggested that the firms make an application to the County Council, which was getting rates from them*.

His Worship asked Cr. Roe if he would approach the County Council, and bring the matter up again in the Borough Council if anything was done. Cr. Roe: I will approach the Wirokino membors.
