THE WATER RACES.
GOVERNMENT GRANT AUTHORISED
The proposed expenditure of £7OO on the local water-race system to ensure its safety will be subsidised by the Government to the extent of £2OO. Mr W. H. Field, M.P., who introduced the recent deputation to the Minister of Agriculture, has now received the following letter from the Hon. M. Nosworlhyr “I have to advise you that I have consulted ray colleagues, the Hon. Mr Pair, Minister of Education, with the result that, he has promised to provide £SO as his Department’s share towards this work. The Hon. Minister of Lands is also concerned, and after consultation with him he has agreed to contribute £SO. These two amounts, with the £IOO I have promised to pay, make up the £2OO which the deputation asked for.” This is a very satisfactory, outcome to the negotiations. The Government contribution is given in respect of the Central Development and Training Farms, both of which are supplied with water and pay no rates though their capital value is £132,000.
