FORGED ORDER
Young Woman Draws £835
at Bank
EX-EMPLOYEE CHARGED
By Teelgraph—Press Association DUNEDIN, June 7.
A sum of money totalling £834 16/8 was taken from the Bank of New Zealand on Saturday morning by a young woman who presented a forged order. She went to the bank just after 11 o’clock, usually a busy time on Saturdays, handed in the order to the teller, and received the money in £5, £1 and 10/- Reserve Bank notes. It was not until she had left the bank and disappeared that the teller realised his mistake.
Prompt action by the police resulted in the arrest of an ex-bank clerk, who will appear before the Court to-morrow on a charge of forgery. The young woman concerned is alleged to have been the innocent fool of the arrested man, who instructed her by letter to cash a bill of exchange on a London shipping firm and leave the money for him at an appointed place. This she did.
Ou the order were the signatures of the manager and accountant of the London firm as well as the initials of the manager of the Bank of New Zealand, Dunedin, which are all said to bo forgeries.
The arrested man is an cx-employeo of the local branch of the Bank of New Zealand.
