MODEL AEROPLANES

Hastings and Napier Clubs DEMONSTRATION FLIGHTS Yesterday the Napier Model Aero Club sent a team to Hastings at the invitation of the Hastings club, and a combined meet was held in the property opposite the Showgrounds at Tomoana. With a break of an hour or so for lunch, flying was undertaken continuously from 10.30 a.m. to 4 p.m., and during the whole day the flying was a source of interest to many of the public. The Napier team had abundance of models to demonstrate. Hastings did their best with just a few models. Weather conditions were perfect the whole of the time. Following are the results of the friendly contests:— Fuselage models. —R. Maddock (Hastings), Imin. 45secs. 1, W. Dawson (Napier), Imin. 25secs. 2, R. MacGregor (Napier), 55secs. 3, G. Maney (Napier), 55secs, 4. Spar models.—G. Maney (Napier), 2mins. 25secs. 1, R. MacGregor (Napier), Imin. Csecs. 2, D. Gollop (Napier), 55secs. and W, Dawson (Napier), sJsecs. equal 3, H. Shattky (Hastings), 43secs. 5.

Both fuselage and span models were hand-launched owing to the length of the grass prohibiting “ rise-off-ground ’ ’ trials.

R. Maddock’s fuselage model made a flight of approximately 2 minutes during the day, but was, unfortunately, not officially timed. The fuselage model used by W. Dawson is the one with which he recently established a new New Zealand record in the Wakefield (outdoor) rise-off-ground trials. R. MacGregor used a fuselage model of design similar to that which won the Wakefield Cup for Gordon Light, of U.S.A., in 1935.

The spar models of R. MacGregor and H. Shattky were each twin pushers. D. Gollop used a plane built on the Napier Model Aero Club’s own plans Specially designed for beginners. This was its first official trial, and proved it to be entirely satisfactory for its purpose. It was a consistent performer at 50-sec. flights. During the lunch adjournment the Hastings club’s acting-captain asked the members of the Napier team to accept the local club’s thanks for the assistance given by the Napier club to the Hastings club and for having given the new club the day’s demonstration and competition. Napier’s captain assured Hastings members of continued support and co-operation in their mutual interests.
