BOXING DRAW

Joe Hall to Meet Rayner in Hastings

ASSOCIATION’S AFFAIRS

A cable dispatched to Sydney this morning completes the negotiations for the biggest boxing match staged in Hawke’s Bay since the so-called “good old days’’ of Clabby and Uren. Tho contest is to be between Joe Hail, the Victorian featherweight and virtual champion of Australia, and Clarric Rayner, Blenheim, former featherweight title holder of New Zealand. The bout will take place in Hastings Municipal Theatre on Friday, June 26 next.

The final arrangements were made at a meeting of the executive of the Hawke’s Bay Boxing Association in Hastings last evening, when Mr W. J. Baillie presided over Messrs D. M. Campbell, H. G. Apperley, J. D. Donovan, W. Nesbitt, B. Shadbolt, L. J. B. Hammond, R. de Lisle, H. E. Connop, and J. Stiekland (hon. secretary). The match committee reported that they had definitely arranged matters with Rayner, and all that was required to complete the negotiations with Hall was to cable him instructions to sail and a draft to cover the preliminary expenses. The total cost of importing the Australian would be £B5, and the Association would require £175 to meet the total expenses incurred in connection with the bout.

At this stage progress reports of the drive for new members were dealt with and it was stated that already there were definitely 40 new members who had paid their subscriptions, and also that there was about an equal number of “promises.” It was felt that once it was known that the Association had definitely fixed the appearance of tho Australian in Hastings, that all these “promises” would be fulfilled and little difficulty would be experienced in securing at least 100 new members.

General satisfaction with this position was expressed by several members, and it was decided to complete the Hall-Rayner negotiations as already mentioned.
