BOUNTIES ON VERMIN
Many Tricks in the Trade
The practices of some of those who collect the bounties upon vermin came under discussion at the meeting of the Hawke’s Bay Acclimatisation Society in Napier last night, when members regaled the meeting with accounts of the “tricks of the trade.” The discussion opened with the statement that, if a bounty were paid upon weasels, many people would breed the animals to collect the money. “Like the white butterflies in the Show,” was ouo interjection. Another trick employed by some shooters was to obtain a bounty upon hawks’ feet in one district, and upon the beak of the same hawk in another. The prize ruse mentioned was in connection with the bounty upon Geer tails. Marksmen had actually made false tails with the grey underskin of the deer, several being made from one skin. Bounties were paid upon all.
