Hot Ashes in Refuse Cause Fire on Lorry From Our Own Correspondent. WAIPUKURAU, June I. The danger of people putting out “live” ashes in their rubbish was shown when the rubbish in the borough garbage lorry caught fire this morning. But for the driver of the lorry noticing the blaze in its early stages, and his presence of mind in procuring a fire-extinguisher, serious damage might have resulted, both to the lorry and driver. In this case, however, both escaped injury INJURIES TO WRIST. Master J. Clarke, son of Mr and Mrs J. Clarke, fractured his right wrist in falling from a bicycle near his home in Nelson street yesterday. He is now a patient in the Waipukurau Hospital. His condition is satisfactory. INCREASED MEMBERSHIP. The membership of the Waipukurau Gymnasium Club has now reached a total of 40. The club has made excellent progress since it was founded, and plans for a public display are being made if all goes well. New equipment lias been purchased and installed in the club room in Turner and Butler’s old garage. LABOUR BALL. Arrangements for the Waipukurau Labour Ball to be held in the Municipal Theatre on Monday, June 22 are well in hand. Excellent music will be supplied by Lew Munro’s orchestra. With the popular prices for admission, tho function should attract a large attendance. 172 CARS LICENSED. Up to the present the number of licences issued in Waipukurau numbers about 172.
